Mobile Home Insurance a Prudent Investment
Written by Henry Johnson
You work hard to make your home a place of pride, but what would happen to all that work if a disaster struck? Mobile homes, while having made great strides in safety in recent years, are still more susceptible to disasters such as fire and tornadoes. Finding adequate insurance coverage for your mobile home can ensure that an unfortunate accident does not leave you in the lurch.

Whether your mobile home is your primary residence or a vacation hideaway, it's an investment like any other piece of real estate and should be covered and protected. It's not enough to just buy a standard homeowner's policy for your mobile home, however. Specialty mobile home insurance coverage differs from standard homeowner's difference in terms of policy inclusions and exclusions and rates and premiums. A standard insurance policy may cover a mobile home, but it may not offer the coverage you need. When covering your mobile home you should strongly consider purchasing manufactured home insurance from a specialty insurer.
When choosing a policy, make sure that it includes coverage for damage due to fire, lightning, wind, rain, explosions and falling objects. Get personal property coverage for your personal effects, and don't skimp on replacement cost coverage. Automatically assume anything that's not explicitly covered in the policy is not covered.

If you have a tool shed or outside carport, get coverage for that too. Remember, if it's not explicitly covered in the policy, chances are it's not covered.

In addition to these coverages, you'll probably also want to get personal liability coverage, which provides insurance if you or someone in your policy causes injury to someone else or their property.

All of these components make up the base coverage you need to adequately insure your mobile home . If you'd like defense in depth, however, there are a number of other coverages that you may want to consider. A personal property floater offers coverage for big ticket items like collections or antiques that may be in the home. Identity theft coverage will protect your family from hackers who may steal your personal information and use it to establish fraudulent credit card and banking accounts.

When buying a mobile home insurance policy, you're going to want to try to get the cheapest coverage you can. Mobile home insurance policy payments and deductibles can vary greatly among insurance companies so make sure that you shop around and get multiple quotes from a wide variety of insurers before settling on one. There are a variety of Web sites that offer calculators that allow you to plug in a few bits of personal information that will let the program devise a quote for you. You can also kick it old school by visiting or calling an insurance agent.

To get the cheapest premium, you should obtain the highest deductible you can handle, and apply for all the discounts you're eligible for. If you already have housing or automobile insurance with an insurer you may be eligible for discounts with that insurer.

If your mobile home suffers damage while under policy coverage, you should immediately contact the claim department of your insurance policy. The claims adjuster on the other end of the line can inform you whether or not the incident you are calling in is covered by your policy. In many cases, most of the details about getting your claim covered can be taken care of over the phone.

Hopefully nothing will ever happen to your mobile home, but if disaster strikes, mobile home insurance will prove to be a prudent investment and a potential lifesaver.
