Rapid weight loss a winning proposition
Written by Henry Johnson
Losing weight, and losing it quickly isn't always a pipe dream, nor is it as dangerous as some sources would have you believe. There are quick weight loss solutions out there, and to avail yourself of them you need to know a little bit about how the body works.

Your body can be your own worst enemy when it comes to losing weight quickly. The body often reacts to protect itself against excessive, rapid loss of weight. For example, if your calorie intake plummets, your body will try to compensate for this drop off by slowing your metabolism. In effect, you won't need as many calories to keep your current weight. This explains the wall some dieters hit, being able to lose a certain amount of weight, but then being unable to lose more.
Also, if you lose a lot of weight quickly, there's a significant risk of jeopardizing your physical health. For example, rapid weight loss has been connected to the manifestation of gall stones. Also, your body may suffer from other adverse impacts as the content of nutrients and minerals you intake fluctuates as you change your eating habits.

Nevertheless, there are a few solutions for losing weight quickly and safely.

Lap band surgery is a means of weight loss that's gaining growing acceptance. In lap band surgery, a gastric band device is inserted through a series of one-centimeter cuts in the mid-section. The device is then secured around the upper part of the stomach. The band has an inflatable/deflatable balloon on the inside that can be altered to decrease stomach size, and thus lengthen the full feeling patients experience after a meal.

The band is fitted around the top part of the stomach, forming a very small pouch. It is made so that it can be blown up or deflated. This helps the patient to gradually, but continually shed the pounds until he or she reaches his or her weight loss target. The restriction of the balloon takes place in a clinical setting and normally takes about 15 minutes to complete. This simple medical procedure is virtually painless.

Bariatric surgery is like lap band surgery, except instead of inserting a band with a balloon into your stomach, bariatric surgery ties off one part of the stomach and re-routes food to the smaller portion of the divide, in effect creating a smaller second stomach. Because the second stomach is smaller, it's easier to feel full, thus reducing the patients demand for food.

Following lap band and bariatric surgery, patients are required to follow a special diet, that gradually re-introduces them to solid food and supplies them with sufficient nutrients and minerals as they recover.

If surgery doesn't appeal to you, there are a number of safe diets that can help you lose weight quickly.

The Adkins diet, if used properly, can be the fast track to a slimmer, healthier you. The Adkins diet eliminates carbohydrates to trick the body into undergoing a process known as ketosis. This helps i switch the body from burning glucose to burning stored body fat instead. This metabolic change helps dieters get around the aforementioned wall that keeps people from losing weight after they hit a set point. The metabolic change Adkins dieters experience also allows them to burn off calories quicker.

If done properly, with close attention paid to taking vitamin and mineral supplements, the Atkins diet can be a safe and effective way to lose weight quickly without risking your health.

Rapid weight loss is an attainable goal, but it does take some discipline and a willingness to make certain compromises and be dilligent about other aspects of your health.
