Everyone has insomnia at one time or another.  But, it can become a serious sleep disorder,if it continues for an extended period of time and starts adversely affecting your life at home and at work.  You should know whether this is a temporary condition, based on your current circumstances, or whether you need to seek help from a healthcare professional.  For starters, here are seven facts about insomnia you might find informative and helpful.

Gender Matters

Although it may seem unfair, women statistically have more trouble sleeping than men.  Three main reasons may contribute to sleeplessness in women:

  • Women who have had children are more likely to wake up nighttime noises.
  • Hormonal changes can also make it difficult for women to sleep.
  • Menopausal women have difficulty sleeping.

Slow Down

The main reason for sleep is simply to give your body a chance to rest.  However, if you have a sleep disorder and frequent insomnia, your heart rate will be higher than for those people who sleep well.  In essence, your heart does not get the rest it needs.  In fact, those who do not sleep well are more likely to suffer from heart attack or stroke.  Your body, including your heart and your mind need to take a break.  Sleep is supposed to provide that break.

Deep Sadness

If you suffer from chronic sleeplessness, you are very likely to develop depression.  Your body and mind cannot function properly without rest.  At some point, you will become so tired that you cannot cope with your day-to-day responsibilities.  Thus, sadness is the natural outcome.

Depression is much more than being sad or simply having a bad day.  Clinically speaking, it can affect your ability to work, your ability to engage with your family, and your ability to cope with life in general.  Before these feelings get out of control, you need to find help to relieve your insomnia.


If you have chronic trouble sleeping, you are more likely to find the ability to sleep in the bottom of a bottle or addictive drugs.  Even taking over-the-counter sleeping pills, for any extended period of time, is not advisable.  It is too easy to become dependent on alcohol, drugs, or sleeping pills.  In the end, it will cause more health problems than it is supposed to cure.
